And now...this.
As we approach our 1st birthday here at Pilates People, we're slowly unraveling our origin story, piece by piece, because it was honestly such a wonderful, traumatic, Hail Mary whirlwind of a moment that I'm not even totally certain that I know what happened.
Even so, and probably especially so, we want to take a moment to appreciate and celebrate that somehow THAT worked. I think there's some sort of lesson buried in there for all of us.
The one that feels most clear to me is that we can make this work, NO MATTER WHAT. That very much applies directly to Pilates People and the work we do here, but I think it applies to our lives in general too.
It's where the phrase "Wherever you are. However you are." came from.
I meant it. And I tested it. And I leaned into it. And it felt good.
And it felt even better when I saw you all doing the same thing.
A quick recap of places we've seen you take us:
Australia
The Philippines
Israel
Brazil
Puerto Rico
a bathroom (hello privacy issues)
the tiny space between the wall and the bed (again, just for some privacy)
front porches
roofs
the beach
the park
a dark Pilates studio because, well, you weren't supposed to be there but I couldn't tell on you
behind the desk at your office
little brother's bedrooms
Connecticut, California, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Illinois, Wyoming, New Mexico, Florida, Texas, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Ohio
and so many more...
And a quick recap of the situations we've/you've found yourself in:
a global pandemic
NYC nightly firework shows that none of us wanted
protests
a stressful election
fractured spines
wedding plans
newly pregnant or newly a parent
broken ribs
broken hearts
new apartments
accidentally moving somewhere because you went on vacation and then oops the world shut down and "I guess I live here now"
testing positive for COVID
living without heat/hot water for far too long
making it work while animals/babies/full grown humans walk across your screen
So. Much. Construction. Outside.
Where am I? What day is it? What is time?
Are the kids in school? Are the home? Is it hybrid? What is actually going on?
To wear pants or not to wear pants? That is ALWAYS the question...
So what we've gathered from this is...we're all DESPERATE for Pilates and we love that.
The other thing we've noticed is that we are living and breathing our motto. You are doing this wherever and however you are, and we could not be more proud of that because we are actively working to break down some false assumptions about Pilates.
You don't have to show up looking or feeling your best. You don't have to show up ready to pull that leg backwards over your head or ready to sweat more than you ever have before. You don't have to be in a studio. You don't have to be "better" than the person next to you (because seriously, what is that?! Pilates is not a competitive sport). You don't need to do EVERYTHING the teacher says EXACTLY how they say it. And you can just be excited that you simply rolled out your mat and showed up for yourself. That is enough.
YOU get to be in control. YOU get to make this your own. And YOU get to decide how this works.
This is about YOU and it is YOUR time, so own it! Lock yourself in the bathroom and cry through those planks, or take us out to the park with you and let everyone be jealous of your fabulous, full, luxurious breathing that's pouring out of your amazing self confidence! Whatever it is you're doing, however it is you're feeling, wherever it is you find yourself, own it. Stand firm. And remember that we are here to help you ground, discover, stay wonderfully curious and open to the possibilities.
We love you all, so much. We can't believe it's been a year and that it's only been a year. What a weird world. Thanks for being part of it and taking us with you through it.
All our love,
Cassandra + Pilates People
